NÜRBURGRING, Germany : July 12, 2009 - Pole man Mark Webber (Red Bull-Renault) finally scored a win in the German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring on Sunday after 130 Formula One starts.

The Australian took the lead halfway though the race despite having served a drive-through penalty for aggressive driving that resulted in a collision. It was a one-two for the Red Bull team as Webber's young team mate and winner of the last race, Sebastian Vettel finished second, less than ten seconds behind. It was the first F1 win for an Australian in 27 years.

The 1-2 finish moved both Red Bull drivers closer to championship leader Jenson Button. The Briton's 68-point lead puts him 21 points ahead of Vettel with Webber now third on 45.5 points. Rubens Barrichello drops to fourth but is still close on 44 points.

At the start of the race, Barrichello (Brawn-Mercedes) got alongside Webber as they came off the grid, and the Australian swerved aggressively to the right, banging into the side of the Brawn. Reigning world champion Lewis Hamilton (McLaren-Mercedes) made the best start, accelerating from fifth on the grid into the lead before the first corner, but he was too hot into the braking zone and ran wide off the track. He touched the front wing of Webber, resulting in a right rear puncture.

Timo Glock (Toyota) started from the pit lane after being demoted to the back of the grid for impeding Fernando Alonso (Renault) during qualifying and the Spaniard gave his pit crew a scare when he spun on the warm-up lap on his way to the grid.

At the end of the first lap, Barrichello was leading from Webber, Heikki Kovalainen (McLaren-Mercedes), Felipe Massa (Ferrari), Jenson Button (Brawn-Mercedes) and Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull-Renault).

On the second lap, Button got past Massa into fourth as Hamilton went into the pits to take on four hard-compound tyres and fuel to change his strategy to a one-stopper. Button now moved closer to Kovalainen and started to challenge for third place while Barrichello set a fastest lap of 1'35.348.

On the fourth lap, Webber set a new fastest lap time of 1'34.602 as he moved to within 0.8 sec of race leader Barrichello.

The stewards found Webber guilty of having caused a collision with Barrichello, and gave him a drive-through penalty.

Button was battling with his super-soft tyres and made a radio request for an early return to the pits for a tyre change, but his crew told him to stay out.

Sébastien Bourdais (Toro Rosso-Ferrari) had been the slowest qualifier on Saturday and then retired from the race on the eighth lap. It was expected to be his last outing in Formula One.

Barrichello was the first of the front-runners to make a scheduled pit stop on lap 13.

On lap 15, the top order was Webber, Massa +10.4, Barrichello +10.9, Vettel +12.6, Räikkönen +13.1, Sutil +14.8, Rosberg +18.5, Kubica +19.4.

Button was down in 12th place after his pits top, and got past both Sébastien Buemi (Toro Rosso-Ferrari) and Nick Heidfeld (BMW Sauber) on the 18th lap to get back into the top ten.

Race leader Webber made his first scheduled pit stop on lap 14 but critically emerged ahead of Button and in ninth place.

Massa then inherited the lead and was being chased hard by Barrichello who had already pitted. Vettel was third, 1.9 sec behind, but he also had still to pit, which he did on lap 21.

Adrian Sutil, who qualified in seventh place, was running as high as fourth place for Force India on lap 22 and was hopeful of scoring the team's first-ever championship points.

Both Brawns were in the thick of it at half race distance. Barrichello was 0.3 sec behind Massa and fighting for the lead, while team mate and championship leader Button was 0.3 sec behind Webber and intent on taking sixth place from the Australian.

On lap 25 Massa went into the pits, and Barrichello was released into the lead again while Massa rejoined in ninth. Sutil was now up into second place - Force India's best race position ever. Sutil pitted on lap 27, but as he rejoined the race, he and Räikkönen touched, with Sutil breaking off the end plate from his front wing. Having just pitted, he now had to return for a new wing and his second place became a 17th place.

Nico Rosberg (Williams-Toyota) pitted from third on lap 29 as Webber continued to reel in race leader Barrichello, reducing an 8-second deficit to just 2.8 sec over half a dozen laps.

Third-placed Button made his next pit stop on lap 31 and swopped to the medium compound tyres that do not suit the Brawn car. His team mate Barrichello now had his mirrors full of Webber's Red Bull before he also pitted, releasing Webber into the lead, despite his earlier drive-through penalty. Barrichello's pit crew had a problem with their refuelling rig. They had to withdraw the hose and insert the one from the spare rig, but it cost precious seconds and insufficient fuel was put into the car.

On lap 33, Räikkönen's Ferrari engine began to blow blue smoke and Button surged past him as Kovalainen also closed for battle. The Finn retired on lap 36 as race leader Webber set a new fastest lap time of 1'34.425 and followed that up with another - two tenths quicker - on lap 37.

The weather had turned Saturday's qualifying into something of a lottery. Sunday's race started under sunny skies with the track temperature 15 degrees hotter, but with 22 laps remaining, the clouds began to build up again over the track in the Eifel Mountains.

Kovalainen and Alonso were having a good battle for seventh place but the Finn pitted on lap 40 when the running order was Webber leading from Vettel +20.9, Massa +22.9, Rosberg +29.2, Barrichello +31.7 and Button +33.9.

With 18 laps remaining and a 20-sec lead, Webber pitted for the last time. He rejoined behind Vettel and ahead of Massa, but Vettel pitted on the next tour and Webber took the lead again.

With 13 laps left, Rosberg made his last stop on lap 47 and the leaders were back in sequence again - Webber leading by 10 sec from Barrichello who had Button right behind him. Vettel was 15.8 sec off the pace, followed by Massa +22.6 and Rosberg +27.4.

Seventh-placed Alonso set a new fastest lap of the race - 1'33.365 - on lap 49 as he chased Rosberg 9.3 sec ahead.

Barrichello had spent the last ten laps with Button right behind him. He made his third and final stop with ten laps left. Button put in a flying lap before he also made his stop one tour later, and he rejoined a split second ahead of Barrichello.

Webber now had a 15.6 sec lead over Red Bull team mate Vettel, with Massa in third 5.8 sec behind. Rosberg was 26.7 sec off the lead followed by Button +29.0 and Barrichello +30.6.

There was a mighty battle for the last championship point on offer for eighth place, with Kovalainen being chased by Glock, Heidfeld and Nakajima all covered by one second.

Fifth-placed Button was catching Rosberg and had a 2.7 sec gap to make up in the remaining five laps, but the championship leader was suffering from reduced grip on his rear tyres due to graining. Barrichello was just 0.5 sec behind Button with Alonso closing fast on both of them - 0.7 sec behind.

With two laps of the race left, Barrichello's rear tyres also started graining, allowing Button to get away slightly.

The matchless Golf - ABT's new GTI

[ Date : 7/12/2009 01:08:00 AM | 0 Comments ]
ABT Golf VI GTI

ABT Sportsline has now been customising vehicles for five decades - and right on time for the Anniversary, the Allgäu Company is presenting the new, sixth GTI. Sporty and fast "Golfs" in particular have carried these three letters since 1976.

ABT was the place to go for everyone who wanted even more dynamic and driving fun from the very beginning. The latest generation of the compact sports car also bears the magic abbreviation, and of course it is now available in a breathtaking ABT version. The engine output is impressive, because due to optimized engine management (ABT POWER), the standard 210 HP (154 kW) become a dynamic 260 HP (191 kW).

ABT POWER S makes the GTI even hotter: a new turbocharger, „Made in Kempten", is used additionally in this case. The 2.0 TSI then has an output of a sporty 300 HP (221 kW) and accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in around six seconds. Thanks to ABT chassis springs, the GTI's centre of gravity is located a good 30 mm lower, so the Über-Golf can be driven even more sportily. The chassis setting, which was designed by Christian Abt, is especially good fun on winding roads. And in the extreme case, the powerful ABT braking system also kicks in.

But an ABT Golf GTI is not only a hot piece of sports equipment for the road, it also looks like one: the bodywork package that designers have created underlines the car's pure dynamics: no matter how you look at the GTI, it is always impressive. Rear spoiler and rear apron superstructure, side mouldings, front grill and apron as well as the diagonal 4-pipe exhaust system form one unit.

ABT engineers also designed a front lip, which provide s a power-performance in combination with the front apron and the new ABT Daytime Running Lamp. The equally elegant as expressive colouring matches this: the paintwork in carbon steel grey metallic harmonises perfectly with side mouldings and front lip in the contrast colour red. The design also continues consistently in the interior, for all screens, the ornamental rings of the combination instrument and the steering wheel panels are painted in the signal tone.

One look at the Allgäu sports car will tell you that it's more than a "normal" Golf GTI - and consequently the sixth variation of the fast compact car with the large tailgate is steeped in the best tradition. Namely, its five predecessors also became powerful Golfs at ABT. ABT and GTI: these six letters have simply belonged together for 33 years.

Dodge Viper SRT10 Will Live On

[ Date : 7/11/2009 09:38:00 PM | 0 Comments ]
2009 Dodge Viper SRT 10 Roadster

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. : Jul 10, 2009 - Chrysler Group LLC announced today that production will continue for the legendary Dodge Viper SRT10.

Originally slated to cease production in December 2009, the Chrysler Group Conner Avenue Assembly Plant — the exclusive home of Dodge Viper production since 1995 — will continue to build the V-10 powered sports car. Chrysler Group is no longer pursuing a sale of the Viper business assets.

“The Dodge Viper has successfully captured the hearts and imagination of performance enthusiasts around the globe,” said Mike Accavitti, President and Chief Executive Officer, Dodge Brand. “We’re extremely proud that the ultimate American-built sports car with its world-class performance will live on as the iconic image leader for the Dodge brand."

Introduced as a concept car in 1989 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the Dodge Viper was designed and engineered to test public reaction to the concept of a back-to-basics, high-performance, limited production sports car.

The reaction was so overwhelming that customer orders began to flow in even before the auto show was over. Chrysler Corporation immediately decided to determine the production feasibility on transforming the crowd-pleasing Dodge Viper show car into a limited-production sports car in no more than three years.

In May 1990, after months of intensive study and testing, Chrysler Corporation announced that the Dodge Viper, powered by an aluminum V-10 was a “go.”

Dodge Viper production began in May 1992 at the New Mack Assembly Plant and was moved to Conner Avenue in October 1995. Viper V-10 engine production transferred from Mound Road Engine to Conner Avenue Assembly in May 2001. In 2008, Dodge introduced the all-new, fourth generation Dodge Viper SRT10. With more horsepower, more torque and more than 30 exterior and interior color combinations, the latest Viper gives enthusiasts the performance they expect on the track and off, with more factory customization options than before.

For 2009, the Dodge Viper SRT10 offers outrageous power, with an 8.4-liter, 600-horsepower (450 kW) V-10 engine contributing to blistering acceleration (0-60 mph in less than four seconds, 0-100-0 mph in the low 12-second range), setting an American sports car benchmark.

To date, more than 25,000 Dodge Vipers have been built.

‘New GM’ overhauls sales, marketing in bankruptcy exit

[ Date : 7/11/2009 06:32:00 PM | 0 Comments ]

DETROIT : July 10, 2009 - General Motors today exited bankruptcy with an overhauled sales and marketing structure, a promise of more management changes and a message that a leaner and meaner automaker is ready to win back American consumers and pay back taxpayers.

“Business as usual is over at General Motors,” CEO Fritz Henderson said in a press conference this morning. “Everyone associated with the company must realize this and be prepared to change -- and fast.”

GM’s Automotive Strategy Board -- made up of regional presidents and global function leaders -- and its Automotive Product Board will be replaced by a single, smaller executive committee that will meet weekly, Henderson said.

The group will focus on business results, products, brands and customers. It will cut GM’s decision-making team in half and eliminate the company’s matrix structure, Henderson said.

A key member will be Bob Lutz, the former chief of product development who had been scheduled to retire as vice chairman and senior adviser at the end of the year.

Lutz, 77, is taking a new position as vice chairman in charge of creative design, brands, marketing and communications. He will report to Henderson.

Chiefs of GM's brands, marketing, advertising and communications will report to Lutz "for consistent messaging and results." Lutz, who had been succeeded by Tom Stephens, vice chairman of product development, will also work with Stephens and design chief Ed Welburn "to guide all creative aspects of design."

North American overhaul

GM is eliminating its North American strategy board and the North American president position held by Troy Clarke. Henderson said he will head the money-losing North American unit.

“I have a number of moves that need to be made in the next couple of weeks, including with Troy, but the job no longer exists at this point,” Henderson said.

With Lutz’s move, Henderson said, GM will split its marketing and sales functions.

This will result in changes in Mark LaNeve’s job as GM North America’s vice president of vehicle sales, service and marketing, Henderson said.

“Sales will report directly to me,” he said. “We actually have a huge amount of change going on. Mark is head of sales today. We have a huge number of changes to take place between here and the end of this month, and Mark is responsible for hitting the sales numbers this month.”

Henderson said GM will have new positions in place by the end of the month. Those will involve some retirements and some people leaving the company, he said. Some people will receive new appointments within the new GM.

“I would have had this done had we closed July 31st, but we closed July 10th,” Henderson said. GM filed for bankruptcy June 1 and originally projected its exit could take as long as two months.

Brands get the bucks

The four core brands -- Cadillac, Buick, GMC and Chevrolet -- will get the focus of advertising money, Henderson said. Ads will not necessarily stress the new corporation overall, he said.

Henderson said that in the next 18 months, GM plans to launch 10 vehicles in the United States and 17 outside the United States.

Nick Reilly, formerly president of GM Asia Pacific, will take responsibility for international operations, based in Shanghai.

Henderson said GM eventually expects to be a minority shareholder in its European unit and will announce leadership changes there this month. The company is negotiating with a consortium led by Canadian supplier Magna International Inc. that plans to take control of Adam Opel AG.

A whirlwind 39-day bankruptcy for GM concluded with the closing of a deal to sell key operations and the core brands to a new company majority-owned by the U.S. government.

The new GM has $11 billion in U.S. debt, Henderson said, not including $9 billion in preferred stock. One of the automaker’s top priorities is paying back taxpayers, Henderson said. The government owns 60.8 percent of the automaker and will lend GM a total of $50 billion.

“We take these loans very personally, and we view paying them off as a very key goal,” Henderson said. “It’s about creating value so the sacrifices that are being made are worth it.”

The new GM will receive any proceeds from the planned sales of Saab, Hummer and Saturn.

The new company is structured to break even when annual U.S. sales reach 10 million light vehicles, Henderson said. U.S. sales haven’t topped that mark this year in the weakest auto market in nearly three decades.

GM’s U.S. sales have dropped 40.4 percent this year, with its market share falling to 19.7 percent. Its peak was 51.1 percent in 1962.

Shaking up the culture

Shaking up GM's long-criticized corporate culture will be a key issue for Henderson as the 100-year-old automaker seeks to relaunch itself.

Steve Rattner, head of the Obama administration's auto task force, said this week that it would be natural for Henderson to cut layers of management to make the company "a bit closer to the ground, leaner and meaner." Henderson took over as CEO when his predecessor, Rick Wagoner, was ousted by the task force at the end of March.

Another pillar of the plan is GM's commitment to launch more fuel-efficient cars and to focus its resources on fewer brands, models and dealerships.

GM has burned through $40 billion over the past four years and posted losses of $82 billion.

The close of the court-approved sale would mark the completion of an unprecedented effort by the U.S. government to save GM and Chrysler from liquidation by slashing debt, labor costs and dealerships.

The White House also has disbursed almost $80 billion to shore up the auto industry, including $5 billion for auto parts suppliers.

Chrysler exited bankruptcy a month ago after blazing a precedent-setting trail for GM by following an asset-sale plan that gave operational control of the smaller automaker to Italy's Fiat S.p.A.

The new GM will have slashed its debt and health care obligations by $48 billion and dropped almost 40 percent of the dealers from an unprofitable network.

GM also will take advantage of a new labor contract with the UAW that the company says will put its hourly operating costs on par with Japanese competitors led by Toyota Motor Corp.

Hyundai launched its first HEV, Elantra LPI Hybrid

[ Date : 7/11/2009 01:17:00 AM | 0 Comments ]
Hyundai Elantra Hybrid LPI

SEOUL, Korea : July 10, 2009 - Hyundai Motor Co. launched its first Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV), Elantra LPI Hybrid, in the Korean market at a press event attended by President Yang Woong-Chul, head of Hyundai-Kia Corporate Research & Development Division, and members of the Korean and international press.

“Listening to the voice of our customers, we’ve responded with the Elantra LPI Hybrid which offers fuel saving advantages and minimal harmful emissions. This car offers a strong message of reassurance to our customers and stakeholders that we are moving with "Hyundai speed" to achieve our goal of environmental leadership in our industry and redefining the Hyundai brand as a technological innovator," President Yang said at the launching ceremony today, which was held at an arboretum outside of Seoul.

Elantra LPI Hybrid delivers a fuel economy rating of 17.8 km/l (41.9 mpg) and CO2 emissions of just 99g/km to qualify as a Super Low Emissions Vehicle (SULEV).

Because it is approximately half the price of gasoline in Korea, Liquid Petroleum Gas enjoys widespread popularity as a transportation fuel.

A conventional 1.6L Elantra equipped with an automatic-transmission would be able to travel a distance of 15 km using one litre of gasoline. If the same expenditure of 1,654 won (US$1.30 per litre, today’s retail gas price) were spent on LPI fuel, the Elantra LPI Hybrid would be able to travel 39 km.

The savings add up: Over the course of a year, Elantra LPI Hybrid would result in about 1.35 million won (approximately US$1,100.) in fuel savings compared to a conventional Elantra assuming an annual average driving distance of 20,000 km. This translates into the fastest payback period of any hybrid vehicle on the market today.

The fuel efficiency of Elantra LPI HEV is further improved with the engine ‘Auto-Stop’ function which automatically switches off the ignition at idle. This feature only functions when the driver applies the brakes after running the car for more than two seconds at speeds of 9km/h or higher. Under certain pre-defined conditions, however, such as when the battery charge drops below 30 percent or when the accelerator is engaged, then the engine ‘Auto-Stop’ feature will be defeated and the engine will continue running normally.

Powered by a 1.6 LPI Gamma engine with maximum power rated at 114 ps and a 15kW electric motor with maximum power rated at 20ps, the hybrid engine of Elantra LPI HEV puts out total 134 horsepower through a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT).

Acceleration from zero to 100km/h is clocked at 11.7 seconds, beating the Honda Civic Hybrid by about 2 seconds.

The vehicle’s SuperVision gauge cluster is equipped with an “Eco Guide” tree icon which is designed to coach the driver into developing more economical driving habits.

An indicator lights up if the driver is operating the vehicle in an eco-friendly way guiding the driver to avoid sudden acceleration and braking. If the driver is performing well, the tree icon will sprout small green leaves to reward good driving habits.

Elantra HEV’s CVT is equipped with a driver-selectable ‘E (Eco-Drive)’ gear that maximizes fuel efficiency by reducing sharp fluctuations in the torque, increasing the use of electric motor assist and electric charge regeneration when brakes are applied.

Available in three trim levels, Elantra LPI HEV will be priced at 20.5 million won (US$16,180) for the entry level HDe-I model and will top out at 23.2 million won (US$18,310) for the HDE-III model (prices include consumption tax exemption).

Hyundai invested KW250.8 billion (US$198 million) over a 43 month-long development period on the Elantra LPI HEV.

Hyundai is targeting sales of 7,500 units in the Korean market this year, increasing that number to 15,000 units in 2010. There are no immediate plans for exports of the Elantra LPI Hybrid but feasibility studies are currently underway in overseas markets where an excellent LPG refuelling infrastructure exists.

In addition to five-year/100,000-km powertrain warranty, Hyundai will offer a six-year/120,000km warranty for the LiPoly battery, inverter and other key electronic and electrical components.

All-New Jaguar XJ

[ Date : 7/10/2009 08:36:00 AM | 0 Comments ]
All-New Jaguar XJ

LONDON : July 09, 2009 - Sleek, sporting and sophisticated, the all new Jaguar XJ brings a daring new spirit to automotive luxury. It offers a seductive mix of striking design, refined luxury, breathtaking performance and sophisticated engineering.
The all new XJ is the epitome of brilliant, fluid automotive style. The elongated teardrop shape of the side windows establishes the car’s silhouette and lies at the heart of its flowing design. And the all new XJ doesn’t just look streamlined: it shares the same drag coefficient of 0.29 with the XF sedan, making them among the most aerodynamic Jaguars ever.

A coupé profile cloaks a cabin that offers comparable levels of space to sedans with a more conventional style. There is generous accommodation for five occupants, while long wheelbase models provide rear-seat passengers with even greater levels of comfort thanks to an additional 5 inches of rear legroom.

The exquisitely designed interior has a strong sporting character throughout. A panoramic glass roof, standard on all models, dramatically enhances the sense of light and space inside the all new XJ. And in keeping with its status as the ultimate four-door Jaguar, the XJ employs a new generation of interior technologies, with cutting edge use of display and infotainment systems such as the innovative Virtual Instrument dials and optional 1200-watt Bowers & Wilkins premium surround-sound system.

At the heart of the all new XJ’s construction is a next-generation application of Jaguar’s unique lightweight vehicle architecture. Primarily aluminum - but also utilizing magnesium and composite alloys – it allows Jaguar to produce a significantly lighter and stiffer body – the lightest in its class. The new structure – which retains the same aerospace-based riveting and bonding processes – has been refined using these advanced new materials to deliver improved strength, enhanced refinement and advanced safety performance.

The all new XJ offers the choice of three powerful and refined engines, which use the latest powertrain technology to deliver an outstanding combination of performance. The supremely powerful supercharged 510hp 5.0-liter AJ-V8 Gen III will head the line-up, with a 0-60mph time of 4.7 secs (0-100kph in 4.9 secs); models with 470hp supercharged and 385hp naturally aspirated V8s are also available.

The all new XJ delivers a driving experience that is just as memorable as the car’s appearance. Benefitting from technologies pioneered on the exciting new XFR and XKR models, including Adaptive Dynamics, electronically controlled rear differential (Active Differential Control) on supercharged models, and a quick ratio power-steering system, the all new XJ combines responsive, sporting dynamics with the refined, supple ride expected from a luxury Jaguar.

With its unique lightweight aluminum body structure and advanced new powertrains, the all new XJ already has a head start when it comes to sustainable performance. The aluminum body uses more than 50 percent recycled material. Components made from recycled aluminum use only five percent of the energy required for new aluminum, equating to a potential savings of three tons of CO2 per vehicle.

THE CONCEPT

“Any good car design – indeed the design of anything of value – should tell a story. The new XJ does that, with a visual hierarchy of clarity of intent. We took inspiration from classic Jaguars like the Mk2 and original XJ to create a Jaguar for the 21st century with pure, sensual forms.”
IAN CALLUM, DESIGN DIRECTOR, JAGUAR CARS

The all new XJ’s distinctive lines mark the next bold evolution of Jaguar’s new design language. The striking elongated teardrop shape of the side window graphic establishes the car’s streamlined profile, and is balanced by a dramatic lower swage line emanating from the front wheels that reinforces the vehicle’s forward stance. The XJ’s sleek lines are complemented by a taut waistline, which further accentuates the impression of length and elegance, and creates a natural tension as it fades from the front arch into the middle section of the car before reappearing as a strong haunch towards the rear.

Bold, confident face
The face of the all new XJ is confident, with a wide front track and short overhang contributing to the finely judged proportions. The nose of the car follows Jaguar’s new design language, with a bold and assertive treatment: the powerful mesh grille and slim xenon headlights creating a strong road presence.
The strong, muscular lower half of the car is contrasted with the slim and graceful quality of the roofline, which takes inspiration from the original 1968 XJ sedan. The wrap-around rear screen reduces the visual weight of the pillars, and gives the impression of an exotic ‘floating’ roof.

Dramatic LED lights
The rear of the all new XJ is notable for its pure, sculpted shape, with a conscious absence of ornamentation. The rear retains its pure form, with a single leaping Jaguar making a strong confident statement. The LED light clusters wrap stylishly over the rear wings, and feature three dramatic red, vertical strips.

Architectural interior design
The overriding impression from the interior is a sense of personal space, a feeling enhanced by the clean, simple form of the leather-wrapped instrument panel sitting low across the vehicle. At the sides of the cabin, a bold architectural wood veneer sweeps forward from the doors to meet at the front of the car, emphasizing the all new XJ’s powerful, dynamic character. This linear, modern use of wood helps to create a truly welcoming environment.

From the outset, the panoramic glass roof has been an integral part of the design concept of the all new XJ. It enables a lower, more streamlined roofline, and also dramatically enhances the feeling of light and space within the car. The roof’s opening mechanism slides the glass upwards and outwards, so that headroom is never compromised. A dark tint and reflective coating help prevent the interior from overheating under strong sunlight, while twin electric blinds provide another level of privacy and sun screening.

THE TECHNOLOGY

In keeping with its position as the ultimate Jaguar sedan, the all new XJ integrates the use of advanced new technologies, driver displays and infotainment systems.
As the driver is greeted by the signature Jaguar ‘handshake’ – the circular aluminum rotary control of the JaguarDrive Selector™ rising into the driver’s palm – stylish 3D graphics materialize in the Virtual Instrument cluster and on the central Touch-screen, giving an immediate signal that the all new XJ takes a revolutionary approach to the way information is displayed in the vehicle.

Sophisticated virtual instrumentation
There is no ‘physical’ instrument cluster display in the all new XJ. Instead, a 12.3-inch high-definition screen, which uses sophisticated – and beautifully detailed – Virtual Instruments, provides all of the functions performed by traditional dials. Jaguar’s designers have also taken advantage of the freedom provided by the Virtual Instruments to help prioritize the most useful information as well as creating a real sense of theater for the driver.

As the all new XJ starts, three virtual dials build before your eyes: the center dial houses a speedometer, flanked on either side by a rev counter, and an information window with fuel and temperature gauges.

To maximize clarity, the display employs a ‘spotlight’ effect to highlight the areas showing the most important information, such as the current speed or engine revs. When required – for example, if fuel is running low, or the driver is selecting a radio station – the rev counter fades away to be temporarily replaced by the required warning message or menu.

This prioritization goes to another level when the driver who is looking for even more sporting performance and handling selects the XJ’s Dynamic mode. In this case, the dials assume a sporting red hue and feature a bold gear position indicator which glows red as the driver reaches the rev limiter.

Touch-screen display
A large 8-inch Touch-screen display in the center console is the ideal complement to the Virtual Instrument cluster, providing an intuitive way to manage many of the XJ's functions, including climate control, audio communications and navigation.

The Touch-screen interface allows the number of conventional switches to be reduced to a minimum, with just a small number of major controls positioned below. The driver can also use Jaguar's latest-generation Interactive Voice control system, which uses the cluster display to present a list of prompts for key words to control a particular function. This new “say what you see” approach quickly allows the driver to gain confidence and familiarity using systems such as personal phone via Bluetooth®, navigation or audio.

Flexible multimedia capabilities including Hard Disc Drive (HDD)
The impressive flexibility provided by the new display and control systems is matched by the all new XJ’s multimedia capabilities. In the U.S. market, the all new XJ comes standard with a CD/DVD player, HD radio, and a SIRIUSTM satellite radio receiver. In addition, the Media Hub provides flexible connectivity through two USB ports, Bluetooth® audio streaming and an auxiliary input, which allow the user to connect with iPods®, iPhonesTM, laptops and Blackberries®, for example.

The audio unit utilizes a hard-disc-drive (HDD) system, so that music from CDs can be loaded onto the HDD for later listening. GracenoteTM is included to allow artist and track information to be recognized. The vehicle’s navigation system is also HDD-based, providing quicker access and the ability to store and update detailed mapping information more easily than CD or DVD based systems.

THE EXPERIENCE

With a stiff, lightweight body structure, a new generation of ultra-efficient, high-performance powertrains and advanced chassis technologies, the all new XJ is an outstanding premium sports sedan that delivers an exhilarating driving experience.
The primary objective while developing the all new XJ was to provide a combination of focused and responsive sporting dynamics, allied to the suppleness and refinement of a luxury vehicle. The all new XJ is very much a driver’s car and is surprisingly agile for its size, but without compromise to comfort.

At more relaxed cruising speeds the all new XJ is blissfully quiet. A full secondary bulkhead, laminated glass in the windshield and side door windows, streamlined aerodynamics and an optimized body structure help to reduce noise levels to an absolute minimum. When driven in a more spirited fashion, however, carefully tuned air intake systems deliver an inspiring engine soundtrack.

Giving even greater level of personal control, the XJ driver can tailor the driving experience to suit their mood or conditions. JaguarDrive ControlTM offers three different modes: Normal, for a comfortable; leisurely drive, Dynamic mode, for a more sporting and responsive character; and Winter mode, for greater confidence in low-grip conditions. Each mode changes the characteristics of engine mapping, transmission shifts, Adaptive Dynamics and Active Differential Control systems and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) interventions.

In Dynamic mode, gearshift points are extended, the suspension stiffens and even the presentation and color of the main instrument dial changes. And in Winter mode, the transmission selects second gear to help provide greater traction from standstill.
There are also interior passive safety technologies with available active front seat belts that draw the front seat occupants in to the seat under heavy braking or hard cornering, and when Dynamic Mode is activated.

Efficient, refined powertrains
The all new XJ offers the choice of three powerful and refined engines. Heading the line-up is the supremely powerful new supercharged 5.0-liter V8, available with 510hp, in the range-topping Supersport model, or 470hp, in the Supercharged model line. Anchoring the engine lineup is the smooth and responsive 385hp naturally-aspirated version of the 5.0-liter V8.

The new direct-injection 5.0-liter AJ-V8 Gen III V8 engines were introduced at the beginning of 2009. They were developed from the outset with direct injection which provides increased power and torque while also improving efficiency. Particular emphasis was also placed on achieving a sporting character, combining responsive low-end torque with spirited top-end performance.

The results are truly impressive: compared to the supercharged and naturally aspirated 4.2-liter V8s in the previous XJ, power is increased by 28 percent on both the 510hp supercharged and 385hp naturally aspirated versions. The 470hp supercharged engine is 18 percent more powerful than the outgoing 4.2-liter supercharged engine.
Yet despite the significant performance increase, CO2 emissions meet stringent EU5 and US ULEV2 emissions regulations.

Advanced six-speed transmission
All engines transmit power through an enhanced version of Jaguar’s acclaimed electronically controlled, six-speed automatic transmission. The transmission has a fully-adaptive shift system which delivers extremely smooth gear changes and works to balance performance and economy.
As befitting a sports sedan, the all new XJ models are fitted with the Jaguar Sequential Shift™ system for manual gear selection, with shift paddles mounted behind the steering wheel.

The lifecycle of a vehicle
The all new XJ takes a new approach to sustainable motoring with its lightweight aluminum body structure and advanced powertrains. It backs this up by quality engineering and testing, and low cost of ownership due to 15,000-mile service intervals.
Jaguar has developed its approach to sustainability by focusing on the ‘lifecycle’ of a vehicle; a more stringent approach to sustainability than stand-alone measures like fuel consumption or CO2 emissions.

A lifecycle approach means looking at the vehicle from start to finish: minimizing the amount of materials used, incorporating recycled material, and low-energy manufacturing processes and designing the vehicle to be recycled at the end of its life.
Jaguar’s aluminum architecture is a significant contributor to the sustainability of the all new XJ. It uses around 50 percent recycled material in the body. This alone creates a saving of up to three tons of CO2 per vehicle, compared to a bodyshell made from new aluminum.

THE LUXURY

The all new XJ makes every journey a special occasion, both for the driver and the passengers. From the Jaguar ‘handshake’ as you start the vehicle, to the comfort and support of the sculpted seats, the style and quality of the interior furnishings, and the outstanding audio system, every detail has been painstakingly developed to create a truly unique experience.

The all new XJ enjoys more sumptuous leather than any previous Jaguar. It adorns all of the main surfaces, including the seats, instrument panel, door tops, center console and armrests. The exclusive Supersport model even has a leather roof-liner.
The seams on the soft-grain leather on the seats feature beautiful twin-needle stitching. Visually seductive, this complex stitching delivers a feeling of true opulence and style, but in a very modern way.

Strong sporting character
The driver grips a beautifully-trimmed three-spoke steering wheel, and the broad center console – positioned further rearward thanks to the absence of a conventional gear lever – helps to provide an intimate, cockpit-like feel.

The all new XJ's elegant switchgear and phosphor blue lighting enhance the contemporary mood still more. The doors feature a beautiful pannier-style storage compartment, inspired by the look and feel of a high-quality, hand-stitched designer briefcase.

Reflecting the all new XJ's approach to luxurious 'personal space', the new trim and color selections, which include a fresh range of more daring colors chosen by the Jaguar Design Studio team, offer the opportunity for increased interior personalization. Eight different mirror-matched wood veneers are available, depending on model, all chosen to create a crisp, contemporary appearance, while carbon fiber and piano black finishes are also available for those who prefer a more technical ambience.

The simplicity and purity of the interior design emphasizes the fine execution of detail. The four spherical air vents contrast a high-gloss piano black finish with chromed metal components. This stylish combination of piano black and chrome is repeated on the center console.
Center stage on the instrument panel is an analog clock, its individual chrome chaplets, spun metal face and iridescent blue background inspired by luxury wristwatches. Many of these design details are picked out by the phosphor blue interior lighting, which further helps to create a relaxing and harmonious ambience.

Outstanding audio performance
The all new XJ’s cabin doesn’t just provide a treat for the eyes, it provides a treat for the ears as well. In addition to the mellifluous but sporting exhaust note, there is a choice of high-performance audio options. In the U.S. market, the vehicle offers CD/DVD functions, SIRIUSTM satellite radio (subscription sold separately), an HD Radio receiver, and connectivity for portable music devices – all standard.

The ultimate audio experience is provided by the 1200-watt Bowers & Wilkins surround sound system, standard on supercharged models and optional on the naturally aspirated XJ and XJL. Bowers & Wilkins is an award-winning British manufacturer of audio and loudspeaker systems. The 1200-watt audio system in the all new XJ combines 20 Bowers & Wilkins speakers powered through 15 channels and state-of-the-art sound processing technology. The result is sound quality so tailored to the interior of the XJ.

Among the innovations employed to achieve this level of aural performance is the first automotive application of the sophisticated Audyssey MultEQ XT® audio tuning system, which digitally corrects imperfections to deliver accurate and distortion-free sound for all seating positions. In addition, the all new XJ marks the first automotive application of Dolby® Pro Logic IIx technology, and is also the first vehicle to also offer the choice of the DTSTM Neo:6 decoder, to deliver the latest 7.1 surround sound audio.

When the rear-seat entertainment package is specified, passengers have access to dual 8-inch LCD screens in the rear of the front headrests and wireless infra-red digital headphones. A specially designed portable touch-screen controller allows passengers to select their preferred source of entertainment, with the two rear screens and all headphones controlled independently.

[ Date : 7/09/2009 12:04:00 AM | 0 Comments ]
New Grand Bentley Teaser #2

CREWE: Wednesday 8 July. Bentley Motors today celebrates its 90th anniversary and confirms that its all-new Bentley will be revealed - and named - in August at the Pebble Beach Concours D’ Elegance in Monterey, California where the company is a featured marque.

New Grand Bentley Teaser #1

Founded by W.O. Bentley in 1919, the company’s first production car, the 3-litre was delivered in September 1921. Over the next ten years, Bentley went on to produce an array of iconic motor cars. At the same time, the exploits of the immortal Bentley Boys – a select group of businessmen, sportsmen and bons vivants – forged the company’s proud sporting pedigree both on and off the racetracks of Europe. The Bentley Boys made the legendary Le Mans endurance race their own, winning five times between 1924 and 1930.

The all-new grand Bentley captures the 1920s ‘grand touring’ spirit of the Bentley Boys, delivering the effortless driving, exclusivity and adventure desired by the real motoring enthusiast. A unique fusion of elegant design, hand craftsmanship and technological innovation, the new model embodies the potent yet luxuriously refined driving experience that is ‘pure Bentley’. These have been the hallmarks of a Bentley since that first test drive in 1920.

It is fitting that the 90th anniversary of the Company will be marked by an all-new car. Such events are rare milestones in the Company’s history. Designed, engineered and built in Crewe, which has been home to Bentley Motors for over 60 years, it has been a ‘once in a career experience’ for many involved. The car and its name, which will be revealed at Pebble Beach on 16 August, signal a new era in British luxury motoring.

All-new Honda Accord Crosstour to Arrive in Fall 2009

[ Date : 7/08/2009 07:03:00 PM | 0 Comments ]
All-New Honda Accord Crosstour

An all-new crossover vehicle based on the award-winning Honda Accord will go on-sale in the fall of 2009 as the "Accord Crosstour," American Honda Motor Co., Inc., announced yesterday. This new addition to the Honda lineup will be sold as a 2010 model. Additional information will be announced later in the year.

Following in the footsteps of Chrysler and Toyota, which fielded the Pacifica and Venza, Honda has announced that it will sell a vehicle it calls the Accord Crosstour beginning this fall as a 2010 model.

Honda declined to give additional specifics for the vehicle, which is not quite a wagon and not quite a crossover. It will be based on the Honda Accord platform, with a roofline higher than that of an Accord sedan but lower than that of an Odyssey minivan or Pilot crossover.

Spy photos of the vehicle show two rows of seats, similar to the Venza. The photos also show two tailpipes, meaning the test mules likely carry the same 271-hp, 3.5-liter V-6 engine as the Accord.

A source said the vehicle will be built at Honda's East Liberty, Ohio, assembly plant.

Honda is jumping late into a segment that has been having some problems. Chrysler was so disappointed by sales of the Pacifica that it killed production of the vehicle in 2007. Toyota had hoped to sell about 50,000 Venzas in 2009, but year-to-date sales are slightly below target, at 20,463 units.

The new Mercedes-Benz Folding Bike – perfectly proportioned for urban commuting

[ Date : 7/08/2009 06:17:00 PM | 0 Comments ]
New Mercedes Benz Folding Bike

Mercedes-Benz UK has just taken delivery of its most compact, sustainable and lightweight urban runabout yet – the Mercedes-Benz Folding Bike. Available now from all Mercedes-Benz Retailers in “Silver Arrows” silver or cool icy white, it’s an intelligent way to get about town when you choose not to drive.

Featuring eight-speed sequential ‘clutchless’ transmission, powerful disc brakes all-round and fully independent front and rear suspension, the new Folding Bike is as well-specified as its passenger car siblings.

The Folding Bike is perfect for the urban commuter, or the non-driver who has always hankered after something bearing the three-pointed star. And unlike any other Mercedes-Benz, it can easily be parked on a crowded train, in a studio flat, domestic hallway or car boot.

The bike’s unique, patented folding mechanism is easy to operate and takes just a few seconds, and there are two different folded positions ensuring maximum convenience. The Shuttle position folds the seat post onto the frame, allowing the bike to be pushed and steered – ideal for easy manoeuvring when negotiating crowded train stations.

When in the completely folded down position, the Mercedes-Benz Folding Bike requires very little storage space, measuring just 80x80x35 cm. These dimensions make the bike ideal for storing in a car, especially for those who want to park out of town and cycle in, avoiding congestion charges. In fact, taking London’s £8 daily congestion charge into account, the Folding Bike effectively pays for itself in under six months – and extra fitness is an added complimentary bonus.

The folding aluminium frame has a suspension travel of 40 mm at the front and rear, which is adjustable for ride comfort. The bike also features: An adjustable gel saddle; ergonomic hand grips; tough Continental tyres with reflective side walls; a slick ‘semi-auto’ Shimano sequential-shift eight-speed derailleur for perfect pedalling cadence; folding pedals (reducing the folded width, and protecting shins); and two powerful disc brakes to ensure a high level of safety. Added to that is a side stand, sprung-flick bell, a protective fabric cover bag – and a luggage rack for everyday practicality. Security is provided by a standard-fit push bolt, which locks the front disc (and therefore wheel) in place.

The Mercedes-Benz Folding Bike is available from all Mercedes-Benz Retailers, is available in Silver or White and costs £1,099.

Other bikes available in the new 2009 Mercedes-Benz Bike Collection include the Mountainbike All Mountain Limited 2009, the Limited Racing Bike 2009, the Fitnessbike 2009 and the Trekkingbike 2009 along with a range of clothing specifically tailored for cycling.

Fiat Panda 4x4 Adventure : a fearless new off-roader

[ Date : 7/08/2009 01:27:00 AM | 0 Comments ]
Fiat Panda 4x4 Adventure

TURIN : July 07, 2009 - The Fiat Panda 4x4 Adventure, a brand new special series that brings new meaning to the famous slogan "The car that does what you think", has today been launched in Italy and will subsequently arrive in the rest of Europe. The original version is for those at one with nature, with a love of outdoor activities, but also for professionals in the agricultural and forestry sectors.

Robust and with plenty of storage, the new version has echos of the Panda 4X4 Sisley, the famous compact off-roader that became synonymous with practicality and durability during the 1990s. With four-wheel drive and a choice of 1.2 60 HP and 1.3 Multijet16V 70 HP engines, the Fiat Panda 4x4 Adventure is available in Italy for € 14,100 and € 16,000 respectively (on the road).

From the outside, the adventurous spirit of the new Panda 4x4 is apparent from its original green bodywork, which emphasises the car's bond with nature and Fiat's eternal special attention to the environment and sustainable transport. The same colour is used for the front and rear bumpers, enhanced by the grey of the central badges, while the lights are bronzed and the windows are tinted.

In the spirit of off-roaders, a matt black was chosen for the pillars, the roof bars, the side bars and the mudguard arches. The 14" wheels (painted in dark grey) with 165/70 M+S tyres and the black framing of the rear lights complete the off-road look of this new version. The inside of the car gives the same impression of robustness and practicality with its black, washable, anti-tear technical fabric and the scratch-resistant washable floor mats. Two great features for those using the car for outdoor activities, hobbies and semi-professional purposes.

In addition, the new 4x4 version has reinforced suspension and a maximum load of 445 kg. The vehicle can be ordered with just the front seats, giving a vast rear compartment configured for loads up to 1,000 dm3.

As well as its strong off-road character, the new Panda 4x4 Adventure also offers the performance levels of a small SUV. In fact, no challenge is too great for its automatic four-wheel drive system with a new electrohydraulic joint. Moreover this new version can go anywhere with its compact measurements: 357 cm long, 160 cm wide, 163 cm high (with roof bars) and a wheelbase of 230 cm.

This all proves that the Panda is not merely a super-compact city car, but a real platform upon which Fiat Automobiles is building a whole family of cars with advanced technology and high attention to detail. The Panda 4x4 Adventure is the latest incarnation of an extraordinarily successful model: since its launch in 1980, the Panda has sold more than 5.8 million units across all configurations, including the 4x4 versions.
